McIlroy bolts out to the lead at HSBC Champions by nevel

Image
The graceful combination of power and balance. The bounce in his step after every birdie. His name at the top of the leaderboard. For at least one round, Rory McIlroy finally looked like the former No. 1 player in the world instead of a guy who hasn't won a tournament all year. With eight birdies and hardly any stress, McIlroy opened the HSBC Champions on Thursday with a 7-under 65 for a two-shot lead over Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Jamie Donaldson. It was the first time since he won in Dubai last November that McIlroy has been in the outright lead after any round. ''It felt good to be out there and in control of my golf ball,'' McIlroy said. Maybe it was just a coincidence that McIlroy's only win of any variety was earlier this week at Mission Hills when he rallied to beat Tiger Woods in an 18-hole exhibition. That didn't hurt his confidence, though the 24-year-old from Northern Ireland pointed to other factors that have been leading him in ...

NHL Three Stars: Kopitar scores OT winner for Kings, Bernier bails out Leafs by nivel

Image
To some, this is basically just a photo of an attractive member of the LA Kings ice crew. But to me and other comic nerds, this photo is an abomination. Wonder Woman and Captain America would never clean the same sheet of ice because one is DC and one is Marvel. Get it together, LA. No. 1 Star: Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings In addition to an assist and a game-high 4 shots on goal, Kopitar fourth's shot, a powerful one-timer, was the OT winner for the Kings in their 4-3 triumph over the rival San Jose Sharks. No. 2 Star: Jonathan Bernier, Toronto Maple Leafs The Calgary Flames were all over Toronto Wednesday night, putting 43 shots on goal to Toronto's 21. But Bernier was dynamite, stopping 41 as the Maple Leafs skated to a 4-2 win. Boston celebrates as World Series joy hits home by nevel

Image
Even with the finish line in sight, Boston took one last deep breath on Wednesday night. The Red Sox were just one out from clinching the World Series with a seemingly insurmountable 6-1 lead but a history of heartbreak had taught Bostonians that nothing can be taken for granted in baseball. They need not have worried. The unmistakable thud of the ball pounding into the glove was all it took for 95 years of anguish to disappear and trigger one of the wildest parties seen in New England "I knew this was going to be a special year," said Boston slugger David Ortiz, the outstanding player of a best-of-seven series won 4-2 by the Red Sox. Click Here To Watch Live Free Click Here To Watch Live Free Click Here To Watch Live Free "When we started rolling, nobody ever stopped the train." The St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter was the last man standing between the Red Sox and the championship but when he swung and missed at a fastball fr...

Thursday fantasy fliers, Week 8: Mike Tolbert and Brandon LaFell By Nevel

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into their Week 5 bye looking, at least statistically, like a team with a respectable defense. The Bucs were (and are) winless, sure, but that was mostly about the ineptitude of the offense. Tampa Bay's D held the Jets to 18 points, New Orleans to 16, New England to 23, and Arizona to 13. Nothing shameful about those totals. But after the bye, things have fallen apart. The Bucs have allowed 31 points to opponents in back-to-back weeks. The defense made us all briefly think that Nick Foles was the answer in Philly (296 pass, 4 TDs), and that Harry Douglas was a suitable replacement for both Roddy and Julio (149 yards, TD). Tampa has given up four touchdowns to wide receivers over the past two weeks, two to running backs, plus the rushing score to Foles. So we've reached the point where this D is no longer on the avoid list, if it ever was. Darrelle Revis spending half his day in zone? That seems like a favor to the fantasy community. Let's get ...

Super League: Bradford to land Roosters' Adam Henry after positive RFL meeting by nivel

The Bradford Bulls are closing in on the capture of Sydney Roosters' Adam Henry following positive takeover talks with the Rugby Football League on Tuesday. The RFL have yet to sanction the club's change in ownership and until the green light is given to Andrew Calvert, Ryan Whitcut, Mark Moore and Ian Watt the Super League club are unable to make new signings. The club's new Board of Directors submitted proof of funding last week and on Tuesday met with Nigel Wood and Blake Solly to present their long-term business plan. "We are now also in a position to proceed with the signing of Adam Henry from Sydney Roosters, which is really positive news for the club and its supporters." Ryan Whitcut The Bulls' prospective new owners are hopeful of having their bid ratified by the end of the week which will then enable them to complete the capture 22-year-old utility back from the Roosters. "We have had a very positive meeting with the RFL (on Tuesday) a...

Gray Matter: The Buddh balance challenge By Nivel

The Buddh International circuit is one of the drivers’ favourite new F1 tracks - but the very thing that makes it exciting behind the wheel can also make it tough to overtake. The Indian circuit is one of F1’s most recent success stories in terms of design, with some drivers describing its mix of fast flowing curves and long straights as being like a modern version of Belgium’s legendary Spa-Francorchamps. It offers a real challenge as it rewards a good rhythm and punishes mistakes – and within the mix there are several corners described by Sebastian Vettel as “rhythm breakers” that if got wrong can completely wreck a lap. This type of circuit is also one that the engineers enjoy, because with many of the corners flowing into each other it requires the car to cope with quick direction changes and that puts a focus on the fundamentals of aerodynamic balance and stability. In a wind tunnel, engineers not only test the aerodynamic properties of the car in a straight line but also move an...

Timothy Bradley retains WBO welterweight title by nevel

Image
One of the world's best: It is now 31 fights unbeaten for the American   Timothy Bradley added Juan Manuel Marquez's illustrious name to his increasingly-impressive resume in Las Vegas on Saturday night as he prevented the Mexican becoming a five-weight world champion. He outpointed the ageing star to retain the WBO welterweight title he controversially won from Manny Pacquiao last year and for which he was much-maligned by the boxing fraternity . But the 30-year-old from California fought a punch-perfect fight against the man who himself stunned Pacquiao with a one-punch knockout last December, albeit winning by split decision as one judge inexplicably awarded the fight to the eventual loser. Timothy Bradley has retained his WBO welterweight title with a split-decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez at the Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas. The early action promised much with both fighters happy to take the front foot, but it was Marquez ...

Wigan defy critics but face new challenges ahead in 2014 By Nevel

Image
The joy on the face of Sam Tomkins when the hooter went at Old Trafford showed just what it meant to the England full-back to win the Super League Grand Final with Wigan. In his 152nd and final appearance, before a world-record fee move to New Zealand Warriors, he had helped his side to a success against Warrington that sealed the league and Challenge Cup double, following August's victory against Hull at Wembley. What made the achievement most special to Tomkins and his team-mates was the backdrop in which it had been won. Two top-class half-backs Brett Finch and Thomas Leuluai had left the previous winter, as had prolific centre George Carmont, prompting some sections of the media to question whether the club could challenge for honours. "At the start of this season we were written off to be finishing fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh or whatever it was, because we lost a few players," Tomkins told BBC Sport.  "To silence those people and win the double is unbeli...

Edwards: Nothing matches the Millennium By Nevel

Great Britain Rugby League legend Shaun Edwards says nowhere in the world gets close to the atmosphere created under the roof at the Millennium Stadium, as the countdown to the Rugby League World Cup 2013 Opening Ceremony continues. Edwards enjoyed a decorated playing career spanning 18 years and represented his country with distinction on dozens of occasions. He graced some of the greatest stadia in world sport, but he says one of his biggest regrets is that he never got the opportunity to play at the Millennium Stadium. “I’ll definitely be going down for the Opening Ceremony. I’m speaking at a luncheon before the game and I’m very much excited to watch the show and both games,” said Edwards. “I think it’s one of the best sporting venues in the world and the atmosphere under that roof should be fantastic. “I haven’t been to a stadium in the world that comes close to the atmosphere you can create there when the roof is closed. “When the crowd is emotionally charged, and when they get ...

Rockets top Pacers 107-98 in NBA preseason game By Nevel

It was a perfect homecoming for Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin in Taiwan. Lin, whose parents emigrated from Taiwan to the United States in the 1970s, scored 17 points and went 3-for-4 from the 3-point line to help the Rockets overcome the Indiana Pacers 107-98 in an exhibition game played before a capacity crowd of 13,686. James Harden led all Rockets scorers with 21 and had three 3-pointers. Paul George's 19 points led the Pacers. George Hill contributed 17, but suffered what coach Frank Vogel called "a mild ankle sprain" in a third-quarter scramble. Lin was clearly the crowd favorite and didn't disappoint with a dazzling array of clutch shooting and pin-point passing. View gallery." Juan Manuel Marquez Must Make Bout with Timothy Bradley a Brawl

Image
Juan Manuel Marquez is at his best when punches are flowing—from him and his opponent. The 40-year-old Mexican legend is quite possibly the best counterpuncher in the sport. When he faces WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley on Saturday, he must entice him into as many exchanges as possible. Bradley is the quicker, slicker boxer. If he dictates the tempo with in-and-out movement, Marquez will have an issue finding his mark. Despite the fact that Marquez is in exceptional shape, he’s still 40. He has never been overly quick, but at this stage of his career, he is bound to slow even more. What Marquez has in his favor is Bradley’s apparent obsession with earning respect. This desire could help to create the brawl Marquez needs. Timothy Bradley Must Beat Juan Manuel Marquez to Gain Spot Among Sport's Elite

Image
Timothy Bradley is the WBO welterweight champion. He's 30-0 with abs that look like he does Insanity and P90X—at the same time. Even with all those qualities, the man they call Desert Storm isn't widely regarded as one of the five-best fighters in the sport. On Saturday, Bradley will have an opportunity to earn some respect when he faces Juan Manuel Marquez at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. BoxRec.com lists Bradley seventh in their pound-for-pound rankings. He's behind fighters who have had their records blemished like Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, Wladimir Klitschko, Sergio Martinez and Carl Froch. Ring Magazine has Bradley listed eighth.
