What if Ravens had drafted Brady Quinn?

Image
When analyzing a draft for a team, the focus is usually on the players drafted. Sometimes, a team's fate is determined by the player it didn't draft. Case in point: quarterback Brady Quinn told The NFL Network that the Baltimore Ravens were poised to draft him in the first round seven years ago. "During that pick, I was on the phone with the Baltimore Ravens the entire time," Quinn said. "So, I was talking to [general manager] Ozzie Newsome ... coach [Brian] Billick and coach [Rick] Neuheisel, because I hadn't interviewed with them, hadn't worked out for them or anything." The Ravens never got a chance to take Quinn because the Browns traded with the Dallas Cowboys to move up. "So, all of a sudden, with like a minute left, I get a call from a 216 area code, which happened to be Cleveland," Quinn said. "And it was the Browns calling to tell me they were trading up to the 22nd pick. The Ravens were going to take me ... so I wasn't

Dimitroff, Smith feel Clowney's passion

Image
Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith expressed no concern about top prospect Jadeveon Clowney's motivation as the team prepares for next week's NFL Draft. There has been talk of the Falcons possibly trading up from the sixth-overall spot to as high to No. 1 overall with the Houston Texans in order to draft Clowney, although Dimitroff, of course, did not address such speculation. Dimitroff did, however, give his impressions of Clowney after spending extensive time with the defensive end last week at the Falcons facility and on the University of South Carolina campus. "Jadeveon Clowney, he's obviously a top-notch talent," Dimitroff told ESPN.com during a charity event Monday night. "He's a fun, upbeat player with a lot of passion for the game. We got a chance to spend a lot of good time with him, not only in our building but at South Carolina. He continues to impress us as an individual." During the NFL Combin

We're going to build through the draft.

Have you ever heard a more repeated phrase about NFL team building? It is the public goal of every owner and general manager, even those whose teams routinely participate in veteran free agency. Young players are cheaper and healthier and can be bound to their initial team for at least four years. Here's a better question: How closely have teams actually followed that practice? The graph at the bottom of this post offers one, albeit imperfect, way to measure that commitment. The number associated with each team is the total original draft picks remaining on the roster as of late last week, via ESPN Stats & Information data. You will see most teams are bunched in the 20s, and as is often the case, the most illuminating revelations sit on the fringes. The Green Bay Packers have an NFL-leading 33 players they drafted currently on their roster, more than twice that of the Chicago Bears (15) and nearly twice the Jacksonville Jaguars (17) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (17). There are

Troy Vincent looks to upgrade NFL

Image
New director of football operations Troy Vincent can see in the NFL's future a developmental league, an eighth official on the field for games, and coaches using tablets on the sidelines to call plays. Vincent, a former Pro Bowl player and president of the players' union, recently replaced Ray Anderson, who left the league to become athletic director at Arizona State. "Each of us shares the responsibility for preserving and growing the game," Vincent said before mentioning some specific projects that could be on the NFL's horizon. One is establishing a developmental league. Troy Vincent, the NFL's new director of football operations, said the league will establish a developmental league and experiment with an 8th official on the field in the preseason. "We need to keep the pipeline of talent flowing, and that means for all areas of our game: players, coaches, scouts, game officials. I am responsible to look at whatever the competition

Shock loss for ace filly Treve

Image
Star filly Treve lost her unbeaten record after a thrilling tussle with Cirrus des Aigles in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp. In a high-class renewal of the contest, the field were taken along at a fair pace by the favourite's stablemate Belle De Crecy from the start. Ed Dunlop's Joshua Tree took up the advantage in the false straight, coming wide off the bend along with the pacemaker, but against the far rail the real race was developing with Christophe Soumillon sending Cirrus Des Aigles to the front and firing him up. Frankie Dettori brought Treve on his outside two furlongs out and there was little between the pair from that point onwards, Treve narrowly edging ahead, before Cirrus Des Aigles (returned the 7/2 second-favourite with British bookmakers and 100/30 on the Pari-Mutuel) battled back to regain the advantage in the final strides and score by a short neck. Norse King finished four and a half lengths back in a never-nearer third. The pair could clash again in the Prin
