Major League Soccer (MLS) wraps another season of top-flight professional soccer from the United States this month with LIVE coverage on ESPN of the season’s crowning event, MLS Cup 2013. In a change from past years, this season’s championship event will be held on the field of the finalist that notches the best regular season record, which by mid-September put at least half a dozen teams in the running.

While the Western Conference has seen a familiar trio – Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders FC and the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy – leading the standings, in the East it has been a revolving door that has seen the top spot in the hands of, depending on the week, the Montreal Impact, New York Red Bulls and Sporting Kansas City, among other sides that have managed to keep a foot in the door. There are certain to be lots of surprises before the finalists take the field to decide the championship this month.
